TreeRoots Revolution

TRR, based on Hornby Island, B.C., was originally founded as a songwriting duo, linking their muse and developing an extensive body of work. Since 1998, acoustic guitarist/vocalist Phoenix Wolf-Ray and drummer/vocalist Peter Cloud Panjoyah had performed their original and cover songs as a duo and as an acoustic combo with various sidepeople. They played in restaurants, cafes, festivals and other indoor and outdoor venues locally on Vancouver Island and the BC Gulf Islands, as well as internationally in the midwest and east coast of the U.S.

Phoenix and Peter were approached with an offer to record their music after a Cortes Island Arts Festival appearance, resulting in their first CD, “Deeper Than Grass”, recorded at Junction Studios on Cortes Island. With the help of seasoned lead guitarist Seamas Manly from Cowichan Bay, the album consists of twelve original songs and contains solid performances on fiddle, harmonica, keyboards, guitars and voice.

Although Phoenix and Peter continue to perform as a duo, since the release of their debut they have appeared as a full four piece band, reflecting the full-band arrangements on the album. “Grass” co-producer Milan Starcic has been reprising his role on fretless bass on recent dates, joining the three full-time members of the group.

Additionally, TRR has been blending in Seamas’s original songs more into the live material, sometimes joined by Seamas' son Ephrem Manly on bass. The band now has three voices leading the way in many of their recent and upcoming gigs.

This is music with a message, packed in melodic, rocking arrangements with powerful, heartfelt lead vocals, lushly layered harmonies and wicked guitar licks. Much of their sound has an alt-country feel, but there are also elements of psychedelia and 70’s prog-rock woven into the musical tapestry. Each song is lyrically rich and often deeply personal. They write about the human condition, love, the search for personal empowerment, family and gender dynamics, women’s & men's issues and more.

Some sample audience feedback (quoted with permission):

"I don't normally pay attention to lyrics but yours really stood out and made me take notice."

"Your voices blend so wonderfully together."

"Very original songs -- we thoroughly loved the music."

"I never cry to music, but I have to admit your music brought me to tears."
